Each pass through the tape drive has a small amount of the oxide layer used to store data. A tape backup unit can be checked without errors and to fail if a file is to be restored. The trick is to use the tape to maximize wear without him.

In short .. it works.
The schedule includes, at any time, 12 bands. The bands are as follows:
1) Monday 5) Friday 1 9) Quarter 1
2) Tuesday 6) Friday 2 10) Quarter 2
3) Wednesday 7) Friday 3 11) Quarter 3
4) Thursday 8) Friday 4 12) Quarter 4
Monday to Thursday tapes are as intended. On Friday is one of four bands used. Friday 1,2,3 and 4 bands are used in succession, so you always have a backup of more than a week. We have situations where a virus has infected a system view, and corrupt files. Only a return to a backup prior to infection allows the reconstruction of these files, and it often takes several days to recognize or identify such infections.
The quarter 1,2,3 and 4 bands are used at the end of each of your quarters. These bands are usually gangs near the end of their useful life. This will be the last to use this band.
This rotation schedule requires the purchase of four new bands each year. At the time of purchase, the tapes are rotated in different roles. Each volume is canceled Friday in anticipation of a quarterly backup role. Monday to Thursday tapes are advanced to Friday 1, 2, 3 and 4 roles. 4 cassettes are introduced into the new: Monday – Thursday roles.
This schedule provides for the use of each tape 66 times. We found that this was a reasonable life expectancy for most backup tapes. The schedule you should have several levels of protection, a loss or damage occurs.
Remember, the tapes have warm and dry and at least weekly and quarterly tapes are offsite.
