Cisco CCNA Exam Tutorial: Password Recovery Procedures

It can happen on the CCNA exam, you can pass it on your production network – but sooner or later you have to do a recovery password on a Cisco router or switch. This includes the manipulation to register the configuration of the router, and that is enough to make some CCNA candidates and network administrators really nervous!

It is true that setting the configuration register to the wrong value can damage the router, but if you do actual research before you begin the process of restoring the password, will you be in order.

Despite what some books say, there is no “one size fits all” approach for the recovery of Cisco forgotten. What works on a router 2500 can not work on other routers and switches. It is a great master Cisco document on the Web, you should bookmark today. Just put “find recovery password to Cisco” in your favorite search engine and you should be there soon.

The following procedure describes the process of recovery from a lost password on a Cisco router 2500th As always, do not exercise it at home. It is a good idea to get some practice this technique in your CCNA / CCNP home lab, though!

The password recovery method studied here is 2500 routers.

An engineer who finds himself locked in a see the router and change the password to register by changing the configuration. The router must be issued first run a “break” within 60 seconds of the startup process. This break-up sequence can also depending on what program is used to access the router vary but <CRTL- BREAK> press is the usual combination.

The router is now in ROM monitor mode. From Roma follow quickly change the configuration register to 0×2102 0×2142 with the default O / R-0×2142 command. Reload the router with the letter i. (As you can see, ROM monitor mode is very different than working with the IOS!)

This particular configuration register setting, the router will lead to ignore the contents of NVRAM. Your startup configuration is still there, but it will be ignored on reload.

When the router to reload, you will be prompted to enter the setup mode. Answer “N”, and enter at the> router to allow fast. Be be careful here. Enter the configure memory or copy on Start Run. Contributors guy who has no memory or copy start, Run!

Enter the command show running-config. You’ll see the passwords are not encrypted in any format or hers. Type config t, then use the appropriate command to a new enable secret or enable password set.

Do not forget to change the configuration register value back to the original setting! The configuration control register 0×2102 will do the work. Save this change in memory or in writing to Start, Run, copy and run free again on the router reboot.

This process is difficult, but it really is not. Just be careful, especially if you copy the startup configuration during the current configuration. You do not get that back! So take your time, visit the Cisco online documentation before you begin to get some practice this procedure with lab equipment, and you are ready to pass the CCNA exam and in your production network!
